Finally – it’s summer!
I’m not sure how many of you have experienced the rainy, dreary weather lately, but the East Coast has had nothing but rainy days for weeks. It’s so depressing. (Not to mention, the weather was unusually chilly…like, I’ve had to keep my fall sweaters out because mornings and nights are so cold! Crazy, right?)
But it’s finally warmed up, all the way up the Eastern seacoast! It’s been in the 80s lately, so that can only mean one thing: Beach days!
Beach days are my favorite. There’s nothing better than waking up to a day off, when the sun is shining and there’s no clouds in the sky. I am fortunate enough to live within driving distance of the beautiful coastal beaches in Maine. (Don’t worry, I’d be jealous too haha!)
I’m always curious of other people’s routines – whether it be getting ready for a night out on the town or in my case, getting ready for a day spent in the sun and sand. Either way, there’s always preparation and factors to consider. I wanted to take you guys through my ‘getting ready’ routine for a day at the beach! Ready? Here we gooooo!
- Wake up and hydrate! When I know I’m going to be spending the day at the beach, I get up nice and early so I have a chance to take my time and prepare for the day. I always start my day with a cup of coffee (need my caffeine!) but on beach days, I make sure I load up on H2O! It’s wonderful lying in the sand, soaking up that Vitamin D, but the sun can be dehydrating (especially if you’re drinking alcohol) and super drying. To keep my body hydrated and my skin looking good, I try and drink at least 32 ounces of water in the morning before I head to the beach. …And I make sure I bring water along for the day. This is my go to water bottle: Nalgene Tritan 32oz Wide Mouth BPA-Free Water Bottle …I’ve used Nalgene Bottles since college, and they’ve never failed me. Do they keep the water cold? No. But they do hold 32oz which is more than most water bottles on the market today!
- Shower. It might seem strange to people that I shower BEFORE going to the beach, but I can’t skip this step. Not only does a nice shower wake me up in the morning, but it helps me prepare my skin for the day. I always dry brush my skin before getting in the shower (Here’s What Dry Brushing Your Skin Actually Does—and Doesn’t Do) to remove the dead skin and to get my circulation flowing! When I get out of the shower, I make sure I load up on moisturizer to keep my skin nice and hydrated. I let the moisturizer sink in for 15 minutes before applying the most important item of the day: sunscreen!
- Sunscreen. Guys – you can’t skip the sunscreen. I know so many of my friends who lay out in the sun for hours with NO protection on the skin (HI CARRIE!) and it makes me so upset! I’ve had multiple family members get skin cancer over the years from too much exposure to the sun…you HAVE to protect yourself from those UV rays! This is my go-to sunscreen: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Water Resistant and Non-Greasy Sunscreen Lotion
- Once my sunscreen is on, I give myself that ‘no make-up, make-up’ look. It involves throwing some foundation on and a little but of bronzer and some lip gloss (This is a new favorite!: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15)
…And that’s it! I like to keep things simple and easy when going to the beach. I throw my hair up into a messy bun and head out the door with my water and a good book! (And snacks, of course haha!)
